Ezekiel 18:1

The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying,

Ezekiel 18:1 (KJV)

This verse introduces a new divine oracle received by Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. The phrase “the word of the Lord came unto me” is a recurring expression throughout the book, emphasizing the divine origin and authority of the prophecies. The word “again” signals a fresh revelation, distinct from previous ones, and marks the beginning of a new section.

Ezekiel 18 addresses the Israelites’ misconception about God’s justice. They believed they were suffering for their ancestors’ sins, expressing this through the proverb about sour grapes (Ezekiel 18:2). The chapter challenges this fatalistic view and emphasizes personal accountability before God.

God, through Ezekiel, refutes this belief and reveals that He judges each person individually based on their own conduct. The chapter emphasizes personal righteousness, obedience, and repentance. Ezekiel 18:1 sets the stage for this message by indicating that Ezekiel received a new revelation to correct the Israelites’ mistaken beliefs.

The introductory formula underscores the prophet’s role as a messenger and the importance of the message that follows. It highlights the reality of divine communication: God takes the initiative to speak to His people through chosen prophets. For the reader, this establishes the authority of the subsequent content and calls for attentive reception.

The phrase “the word of the Lord” is a technical term for prophetic revelation, carrying weight and authority. This verse reflects the broader biblical theme of God’s ongoing communication with humanity, as seen throughout the prophetic literature. In the Christian context, this points to the ultimate revelation of God in Jesus Christ, who is called the Word (John 1:1). However, the immediate focus is on Ezekiel’s prophetic ministry and the divine message he received.

The verse is a reminder that God speaks, and His words are to be heeded. It demonstrates the pattern of God’s dealings with His people: He does not leave them without guidance but sends His word through His servants. For the believer, this encourages confidence in the reliability and authority of Scripture. The verse also implies the necessity of faithful transmission: Ezekiel received the word and was to deliver it exactly as given. This has implications for the church’s responsibility to proclaim God’s word faithfully.

Ezekiel 18:1 introduces a message of personal responsibility and highlights that God judges each person based on their own actions, rather than punishing them for the sins of their ancestors. The verse emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility and God’s fair and just judgment of each individual.
