Ezekiel 19:2

And say, What is thy mother? A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions.

Ezekiel 19:2 (KJV)

Ezekiel, a prophet among the exiles in Babylon during the sixth century BCE, received this lamentation—a funeral dirge—concerning the princes of Israel. The opening question, “What is thy mother?” points to the nation of Judah, especially its royal house and leadership. The answer, “A lioness,” conveys both the former strength and glory of the nation and, as some interpret, its cruelty and lack of justice.

The lioness represents the nation of Israel, particularly its ruling power. Lions symbolize strength, power, and dominance, so the lioness embodies the kingdom’s authority and influence. The phrase “she lay down among lions” refers to Judah’s alliances and interactions with powerful nations such as Egypt and Babylon, whose kings are also called “lions.” Instead of relying on God’s guidance and protection, Israel’s rulers sought security and strength from human sources. The second phrase, “she nourished her whelps among young lions,” describes how the nation raised its princes and rulers in the midst of these foreign powers, training them to continue the same patterns of political alliance rather than trusting in God’s wisdom.

This lamentation sets the stage for the rest of the chapter, which details how these “whelps“—the kings of Judah—were captured and brought down, illustrating the downfall of the royal house. The imagery of the lioness and her cubs echoes the broader biblical theme of God’s judgment on leaders who forsake His ways and rely on worldly alliances.

Although this passage addresses the ancient kingdom of Israel, it offers relevant lessons for believers today. It reminds leaders and individuals to rely on God’s wisdom rather than human strength or worldly systems. It also emphasizes the importance of nurturing the next generation in godly values, so that they do not repeat the mistakes of relying on political or social alliances instead of trusting in God.

Ezekiel 19:2 portrays the tragic state of Israel’s leadership, highlighting their failure to trust in God and their reliance on alliances with other nations. It serves as a cautionary message to seek God’s wisdom and guidance, and to raise future generations to walk in His ways.
