Ezekiel 20:2

Then came the word of the Lord unto me, saying,

Ezekiel 20:2 (KJV)

Ezekiel 20:2 introduces the divine response to the elders of Israel who came to inquire of the Lord. The prophet Ezekiel ministered during the Babylonian exile, a time when the Israelites were in captivity because of their disobedience. In verse 1, the elders sat before Ezekiel, seeking guidance, though their specific question is not recorded. Verse 2 marks the beginning of God’s answer, using a recurring prophetic formula that signals the start of a divine revelation.

The phrase “Then came the word of the LORD unto me” emphasizes that Ezekiel spoke not his own thoughts but the very message God gave him. This formula appears throughout the book of Ezekiel, underscoring the authority and divine origin of his prophecies. The elders recognized their need for divine direction, and God responded by speaking through His prophet.

In the broader chapter, God recounts Israel’s rebellious history, from Egypt to the present, highlighting their persistent idolatry and rejection of His laws. He expresses His anger and justice, yet also promises restoration and a return to the land. This verse sets the stage for that longer revelation, showing that God both judges sin and remains faithful to His covenant.

The verse teaches that God communicates with His people and that His word carries authority. Ezekiel served as a mouthpiece, delivering warnings, calls to repentance, and promises of hope. For believers, this highlights the importance of seeking and heeding God’s word, knowing that He speaks through Scripture and His appointed messengers.

When we come before God with sincere hearts, He does not leave us without guidance. Just as the elders approached Ezekiel, we can approach God through prayer and His Word, trusting that He will answer according to His will. This verse encourages us to listen carefully to what God reveals, respond with obedience, and remember that His word remains the foundation for faith and life.
