Ezekiel 21:27

I will ouerturne, ouerturne, ouerturne it, and it shall be no more, vntill he come, whose right it is, and I wil giue it him. Ezekiel 21:27 (KJV)

more,

until he come whose right it is; and I will give it

him. Ezekiel 21:27 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Ezekiel is set during the Babylonian exile, a period when Jerusalem and the temple had been destroyed by the Babylonians. In this turbulent era Ezekiel was called by God to be a prophet to a people in exile, delivering messages that combined both judgment against sin and hope for restoration.

Understanding the Verse: In this passage God, speaking through Ezekiel, announces the removal of a corrupt and oppressive ruling authority in Israel and Judah. The triple repetition of “overturn” underscores the certainty and completeness of the coming judgment. The phrase “it shall be no more” conveys that the existing political and religious structures will be abolished and cease to exist, making way for a new order.

Messianic Interpretation: The latter clause—“until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him”—has been understood by many Christian traditions as a messianic prophecy pointing to a future righteous ruler who will inherit God’s kingdom. While the text itself does not explicitly label this figure as the Messiah, the language suggests a divinely appointed leader who will restore God’s people under rightful authority.

Application: This verse emphasizes God’s absolute sovereignty over earthly powers and His authority to execute judgment on nations and rulers. Believers are reminded that ultimate control rests with God, who can bring about justice and righteousness. The promise of a future righteous ruler offers hope that God will establish a kingdom marked by divine justice, encouraging Christians to trust in God’s plan and to live in anticipation of His righteous reign.
