Ezekiel 22:17

And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Ezekiel 22:17 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel was written during the Babylonian exile, when the people of Judah were taken captive because of their persistent disobedience to God. Through the prophet Ezekiel, God communicated messages of judgment, warning, and hope. This verse introduces a specific divine message that follows in Ezekiel 22:18-22, where God compares the people to dross in a furnace.

This verse is a standard prophetic formula indicating that Ezekiel received a direct revelation from God. The phrase “the word of the LORD came unto me” appears frequently throughout the book, marking moments when God speaks to His chosen servant. It emphasizes that Ezekiel’s words were not his own opinions but carried divine authority and authenticity.

Ezekiel acted as a watchman and spokesperson for God, delivering warnings, calling the people to repentance, and foretelling the consequences of their actions. This verse sets the stage for the message of judgment that follows, where God describes the sins of Jerusalem, including bloodshed, idolatry, and oppression.

The same prophetic formula appears in Ezekiel 1:3, 3:16, and 6:1, among other places, reinforcing that the prophet’s message came directly from God. The imagery of dross in Ezekiel 22:18-22 illustrates how the people had become impure, like worthless metal left after refining, fit only for judgment.

This verse reminds readers of the seriousness of receiving God’s word. God takes the initiative to speak to His people, even in judgment, and His words demand attention and reverence. It also affirms the reliability of prophetic Scripture: what Ezekiel recorded is the very word of God.

While this verse addresses the specific context of Jerusalem during the exile, it highlights God’s righteous judgment against sin and His desire for repentance and restoration. Later passages in Ezekiel describe God’s plan to renew and redeem His people, demonstrating that judgment is not His final word.
