Ezekiel 22:9

In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they commit lewdness.

Ezekiel 22:9 (KJV)

This verse is part of God’s indictment against Jerusalem through the prophet Ezekiel. The city’s leaders and inhabitants had become deeply corrupt, despising God’s holy things and profaning His Sabbaths (Ezekiel 22:8). The sins listed here are not isolated but pervasive, occurring openly in the midst of the community.

The phrase “men that carry tales to shed blood” refers to individuals who spread malicious gossip and false accusations, stirring up wrath and revenge that lead to violence and bloodshed. This violates the command against bearing false witness (Exodus 20:16) and reflects a breakdown of justice and community trust.

“Eating upon the mountains” symbolizes participating in idolatrous practices. The Israelites were commanded to worship God in the temple, but they engaged in pagan rituals on the high places, including eating sacrificial meals offered to idols. This disobedience was a significant offense against God.

The phrase “commit lewdness” refers to engaging in immoral and sexually immoral acts. The people of Jerusalem had indulged in sinful behavior, violating God’s laws and standards of holiness. Their actions displayed a lack of respect for God and His commandments.

  • The Power of Words: Ezekiel highlights the destructive power of gossip and slander. We should be cautious about the words we speak, ensuring that they promote love, unity, and truth, rather than causing harm or division.

  • The Danger of Idolatry: The Israelites’ participation in idolatrous practices reveals the dangers of worshiping false gods and compromising one’s faith. We should remain steadfast in our devotion to God and avoid any form of idolatry or compromise with worldly practices.

  • Moral Purity: God expects His people to live in holiness and righteousness, avoiding immoral behavior. We should strive to uphold God’s standards of purity and refrain from indulging in sinful acts that are contrary to His will.

  • The Need for Repentance: The message of Ezekiel was a call to repentance and turning back to God. Likewise, when we recognize our sins, we should repent, seek God’s forgiveness, and turn away from our wicked ways.

This verse serves as a warning against the destructive power of slander, the danger of idolatry, and the seriousness of sexual sin. It calls believers to uphold truth, worship God alone, and maintain purity in their communities, knowing that persistent sin brings God’s judgment.
