Ezekiel 27:24

Posted on 18 May at 14:58

“These were thy merchants in all sorts of things, in blue clothes, and broidered work, and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords, and made of cedar, among thy merchandise.”

Context:Ezekiel 27:24 is part of a larger passage in the book of Ezekiel where the prophet delivers a message of lamentation over the downfall of Tyre, a prominent maritime city known for its wealth and commerce.

The chapter describes Tyre’s extensive trading activities and the various nations involved in its trade network.

In this particular verse, Ezekiel lists some of the items that were traded by the merchants of Tyre.

“These were thy merchants in all sorts of things”:Tyre had a vast network of merchants involved in various types of trade.

The city was known for its bustling marketplace and the wide array of goods available for trade.

“In blue clothes, and broidered work”:One of the commodities traded by Tyre was textiles, specifically blue garments and embroidered work.

The mention of “blue” may refer to the dye obtained from the murex snail found in the Mediterranean Sea, which was highly valued in ancient times.

“And in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords, and made of cedar”:The merchants of Tyre also traded in luxurious garments and clothing items.

The mention of “chests” suggests that these were storage containers used to transport and protect the valuable apparel during trade.

These chests were crafted from cedar, a durable and aromatic wood commonly found in the region.

It’s important to note that this verse is part of a larger passage with a broader message.

Ezekiel’s purpose in describing Tyre’s wealth and merchandise is to illustrate its prosperity and the reasons for its pride and arrogance.

The subsequent verses in Ezekiel 27 continue to describe the downfall of Tyre and how it will be brought low by God’s judgment.

Overall, Ezekiel 27:24 showcases the vast trade network and the range of luxurious goods that the merchants of Tyre dealt with.

It serves as a reminder that material wealth and possessions, though valuable, can be fleeting and subject to God’s judgment.
