Ezekiel 27:23

Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad, were thy merchants.

Ezekiel 27:23 (KJV)

In this verse, the prophet Ezekiel delivers a message from God concerning Tyre, a prominent trading city in ancient times. The chapter as a whole describes the grandeur and prosperity of Tyre and its relationships with various nations, portraying it as a renowned center of commerce with ships and merchants engaged in extensive trade across the region.

Haran is believed to refer to a city in Mesopotamia, possibly the same place where Abraham’s family resided before their migration to Canaan. It represents a trade partner of Tyre.

Canneh is an uncertain location, but it is thought to have been another city in Mesopotamia, possibly associated with the Babylonian or Assyrian empire. It also symbolizes a trading partner of Tyre.

The mention of Eden here is not the same as the Garden of Eden mentioned in the early chapters of Genesis. In this context, it likely refers to a region or a city known for its prosperity and abundance, representing another trading partner of Tyre.

Sheba is generally associated with the region of modern-day Yemen and had significant trade relations with Tyre. It was known for its spices, gold, and precious stones.

Asshur refers to the Assyrian empire, which was a dominant power in the region during Ezekiel’s time. This suggests that Tyre had trade connections with the Assyrians.

Chilmad is not clearly identified in historical records, but it is thought to have been a region or city known for trading. Its exact location remains uncertain.

Ezekiel 27:23 highlights the extensive network of trade partners that Tyre had cultivated, representing various regions and kingdoms. This verse emphasizes the city’s wealth and influence, which were derived from its commerce and maritime activities.

The listing of these places underscores the historical reality of Tyre’s commercial empire. Haran’s connection to Abraham’s journey and Sheba’s wealth in spices and gold illustrate the far-reaching trade routes that contributed to Tyre’s prosperity.

This verse serves to emphasize the greatness of Tyre as a prominent trading hub and illustrates its reliance on relationships with other nations for economic prosperity. It reminds us that God’s prophetic messages were not limited to the people of Israel but also extended to the nations and cities surrounding them.

The verse also demonstrates God’s sovereignty over nations and economies. Tyre’s pride and wealth led to judgment, showing that human prosperity is fleeting without God.
