Ezekiel 33:25

Listen to this article

“Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land?”

Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and it contains messages from God to the exiled Israelites in Babylon. The prophet Ezekiel served as a watchman, warning the people about their sins and calling them to repentance. In this particular chapter, Ezekiel addresses the responsibility of the watchman and issues a warning to the people of Israel about their continued disobedience.

Verse Analysis:1. “Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD”: The prophet Ezekiel is commanded to relay a message from the Lord God to the people of Israel. This indicates the authority and divine origin of the message being conveyed.

“Ye eat with the blood”: This phrase refers to a violation of the dietary laws given to the Israelites. In the Mosaic Law, God instructed the Israelites not to consume the blood of animals (Leviticus 17:10-12). This prohibition was meant to emphasise the sacredness of life and to separate them from pagan practices.

“And lift up your eyes toward your idols”: The people of Israel had turned away from the worship of the true God and had begun to worship idols, which were false gods. This act of looking toward idols symbolises their devotion and allegiance to these idols instead of the Lord.

“And shed blood”: This phrase refers to the shedding of innocent blood, indicating that the people were involved in acts of violence and injustice. It implies that they were engaged in practices that violated the commandment against murder (Exodus 20:13) and disregarded the value of human life.

“And shall ye possess the land?”: This is a rhetorical question posed by the Lord. The people of Israel had been promised the land of Canaan as their inheritance, but their continued disobedience and sinful practices jeopardised their possession of the land. This question challenges the Israelites to consider whether they deserve to possess the land while persisting in their sinful ways.

  • Ezekiel 33:25:addresses the spiritual condition of the Israelites and highlights their blatant disregard for God’s commands. The people were engaging in idolatry, violating dietary laws, shedding innocent blood, and yet still expecting to possess the promised land.

This verse serves as a reminder that God’s blessings and promises are contingent upon obedience and faithfulness. The Israelites’ disobedience was a direct violation of the covenant they had with God, and it placed them at risk of losing the land that was intended to be their inheritance.

For believers today, this verse serves as a warning against compromising our commitment to God and His principles. It reminds us to examine our own lives and ensure that we are not engaging in practices that are contrary to God’s Word. We should strive to honour God with our actions, worship Him alone, and respect the sanctity of life.

Ultimately, Ezekiel 33:25 emphasises the importance of repentance and turning away from sin. It encourages us to align our lives with God’s will, knowing that His blessings and promises are reserved for those who faithfully follow Him.
