Ezekiel 33:20

Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.

Context

Ezekiel prophesied to the Israelites in Babylonian exile, delivering God’s messages of judgment, warning, and restoration. In this verse, the people voice a complaint: “The way of the Lord is not equal.” They felt God’s judgments were unfair. God answers directly, declaring that He will judge each person according to their own ways.

Meaning

The accusation that God’s way is “not equal” is turned back on the people. The same complaint appears in Ezekiel 18:25, where God asks whether His way is not equal and whether their ways are not unequal. The fault lies not with God’s justice but with human perception and conduct. God’s judgment is perfectly fair and impartial, based on each person’s deeds, not on arbitrary or unjust principles. The people’s charge persists despite clear evidence of God’s righteousness throughout Ezekiel’s prophecies.

Personal Accountability

This verse emphasizes individual responsibility. Each person will be judged according to their own conduct and choices. We cannot rely on the faith or righteousness of others; we must have a personal relationship with God and live according to His commands.
