Ezekiel 36:10
And I will multiplie men vpon you, all the house of Israel, euen all of it, and the cities shall be inhabited, and the wastes shall be builded. Ezekiel 36:10 (KJV)
even
all of it: and the cities shall be inhabited, and the wastes shall be builded: Ezekiel 36:10 (KJV)
Context: The book of Ezekiel is set during Israel’s exile in Babylon. The prophet Ezekiel was called by God to deliver messages of judgment, restoration, and hope to the exiled Israelites. In this chapter God speaks through Ezekiel, promising to restore the land of Israel and bless His people.
Restoration and Multiplication: In verse 10 God declares His intention to multiply the people of Israel. After a period of desolation and destruction He promises to bring back the exiled Israelites and restore their population, pointing to a future time when He will gather His people back to the land and bless them abundantly.
Fulfillment in History: This prophecy had both an immediate and a future fulfillment. In the immediate context, after the Babylonian exile some Israelites returned to Jerusalem and began to rebuild the cities and the Temple under the leadership of Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah. While there was a partial return and reconstruction, it did not fully realize the grand vision of multiplication and restoration foretold by Ezekiel.
Spiritual Significance: Beyond the historical restoration the verse also holds spiritual significance. In Scripture the people of Israel often represent God’s chosen people, yet they also symbolize God’s redeemed community as a whole. The promise of multiplication and restoration therefore foreshadows the spiritual restoration and blessings that God offers to all His people through Jesus Christ.
The New Covenant: The ultimate fulfillment of this promise is found in the New Covenant established by Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection Jesus reconciled humanity to God and created a new community of believers that includes both Jews and Gentiles who have put their faith in Him. As a result the people of God, the Church, have multiplied and continue to grow throughout history.
Application: As believers we can draw encouragement from Ezekiel 36:10. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Just as He restored and multiplied the people of Israel, He is at work in our lives, bringing restoration, blessings, and growth. We can trust that He has a plan for us and will fulfill His purposes in us.
