Ezekiel 36:30

And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen.

Context

Ezekiel prophesied during the Babylonian exile, when the Israelites were in captivity because of their disobedience. In this chapter, God promises restoration after judgment. The preceding verses describe God gathering His people, cleansing them, and giving them a new heart and a new spirit. Verse 30 then shows the physical outcome of that spiritual renewal: God will multiply the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field.

Meaning

The fruit of the tree includes produce from gardens, orchards, and vineyards, such as olives, grapes, and pomegranates. The increase of the field refers to grain and grass, providing food for both people and animals. This promise reverses the curse of famine that had come upon the land because of Israel’s sin. God’s abundance would remove the shame and disgrace that the surrounding nations had heaped upon His people. The reproach of famine among the heathen would cease, and Israel’s agricultural prosperity would become a visible sign of God’s favor and vindication.

While the primary meaning is literal restoration of the land’s fertility, Scripture often uses agricultural blessings as symbols of God’s favor and spiritual abundance. The fruit of righteousness can be seen as the spiritual blessing God bestows on His people, who are described as trees of righteousness. This spiritual interpretation should be held carefully, as the verse’s immediate context is the physical restoration of the land. Yet it points to the deeper truth that God’s blessings flow from a restored relationship with Him.

Application

As believers today, we can trust in God’s faithfulness and provision. Just as He promised to provide for and protect the Israelites, He remains faithful to His people throughout history. We can rely on Him to take care of our needs and bless us according to His perfect will. This verse also teaches us the importance of gratitude and testimony. The Israelites, upon experiencing God’s blessings and deliverance, would have had reason to be grateful and to share their testimony with the surrounding nations. Likewise, when God blesses us and provides for our needs, we should cultivate a heart of gratitude and testify about His goodness and faithfulness to those around us.

Ezekiel 36:30 is a promise of God’s faithfulness, provision, and protection. It reminds us to trust in God’s promises, be grateful for His blessings, and share our testimonies with others.
