Ezekiel 36:36

Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the Lord build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the Lord have spoken it, and I will do it.

Ezekiel 36:36 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is set during the Babylonian exile, when Israel was taken captive to Babylon. Ezekiel, called by God, delivered messages of judgment and restoration to the exiled people. This verse concludes a larger prophecy of restoration, in which God promises to bring the Israelites back to their land and to rebuild what had been destroyed.

The phrase “the heathen that are left round about you” refers to the neighboring nations who survive and witness Israel’s restoration. They will know that the LORD Himself builds the ruined places and plants the desolate land. The declaration “I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it” is a divine oath, guaranteeing the certainty of the promise. The Hebrew name used here is Yahweh, underscoring God’s covenant relationship with Israel.

The immediate context in Ezekiel 36:33-35 describes the land being tilled and becoming like the garden of Eden, with ruined cities fortified and inhabited. This restoration has both literal and symbolic meaning. Literally, it points to the return from exile and the rebuilding of Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity. Symbolically, it points to God’s redemptive work in the lives of His people, showing how He can take what is ruined and desolate and bring new life.

Although the passage refers specifically to Israel, the principles apply to all believers. It reminds us that God is a God of restoration and renewal. No matter how broken or desolate our lives may seem, He has the power to rebuild and restore us. The verse encourages us to trust in His promises and have faith that He will fulfill what He has spoken.

When we see the transformation of a once-desolate place, we can recognize the hand of the Almighty at work, just as the surrounding nations will know that the LORD alone rebuilds. This assurance strengthens our hope and motivates us to live in obedience, awaiting the ultimate restoration that God promises.
