Ezekiel 37:19
Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.
Ezekiel 37:19 (KJV)
Context
Ezekiel 37:19 comes from a larger vision in which God shows the prophet a valley of dry bones and then gives him a symbolic action involving two sticks. After Solomon’s reign, the united kingdom split into the northern kingdom, often called Ephraim after its leading tribe, and the southern kingdom of Judah. Both eventually fell into exile because of their disobedience, leaving the people scattered.
God commands Ezekiel to take two sticks. The stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, represents the northern tribes, while the stick of Judah represents the southern kingdom. These sticks were likely wooden tablets used for writing, serving as a visual aid. The Lord tells Ezekiel to join them into one stick in His own hand, a dramatic sign that He Himself would reunite what human conflict had torn apart.
Meaning
The heart of this verse is God’s own promise: “I will take,” “I will put,” and “I will make them one stick.” The repeated “I will” shows that reunification is not something Israel could achieve by their own effort. It is God’s sovereign work. The phrase “in mine hand” emphasizes that the unity is held securely by God, not by human power or political agreement. The joining of the sticks symbolizes the restoration of the divided nation into one people under one king.
The verse also carries a spiritual meaning. The division between Ephraim and Judah was not only political but also a breach in the covenant relationship between God and His people. By promising to make them one, God was declaring His intention to heal that breach and restore His people to Himself. The unity He brings is not merely a treaty or alliance; it is a new creation, accomplished by His power and sustained by His faithfulness.
Biblical connections
The immediate context in Ezekiel 37:20-22 explains that God will gather the children of Israel from among the nations and make them one nation, with one king, never again to be divided. This points to the future restoration of Israel, a promise that runs through the prophets. For Christian readers, the same divine power that unites divided peoples also points to the unity of all believers in Christ, though the primary reference remains Israel’s restoration.
Application
This verse encourages us to trust God’s ability to bring unity out of division. When relationships, churches, or communities are fractured, we can be tempted to rely on our own strategies or to lose hope. Ezekiel 37:19 reminds us that God is sovereign over every broken situation. He can take what seems irreparably divided and make it one in His hand. Our part is to bring the pieces to Him, to obey His instructions, and to wait for His work with faith.
Reflection
Consider the divisions in your own life—whether in your family, your church, or your heart. Are you holding onto a stick that needs to be joined to another? God’s promise in this verse is not just for ancient Israel; it is a living word that He is able to heal and restore. Ask the Lord to show you where He is calling you to trust His power to make one what has been broken.
