Ezekiel 37:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:58

“And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.”

Context:The book of Ezekiel was written by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile of Israel. God called Ezekiel to be a prophet to the exiled Israelites, delivering messages of judgment, hope, and restoration. In Ezekiel 37, the prophet receives a vision of the valley of dry bones.

Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones:In this vision, God takes Ezekiel to a valley filled with dry bones. The bones represent the hopeless and lifeless condition of the exiled Israelites. The fact that they are very dry signifies that they are completely devoid of life, vitality, and hope.

Symbolism and Spiritual Meaning:a. The Dry Bones: The dry bones symbolize the people of Israel in their state of spiritual desolation, despair, and loss of hope. It represents a nation that has experienced the judgment of God and has been scattered and oppressed.

b. Passing by them: God leads Ezekiel to pass by the dry bones, allowing him to witness the magnitude of the situation. This emphasizes the reality of the desperate condition of the people and serves as a reminder of their need for divine intervention.

Application to Israel and Restoration:The vision of the valley of dry bones was given to encourage the Israelites in exile and to reveal God’s promise of restoration. It serves as a powerful metaphor for the spiritual and physical renewal of Israel.

a. The Power of God’s Word: In the subsequent verses (Ezekiel 37:3-10), God commands Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones, and as he does, the bones come together, sinews and flesh cover them, and breath enters them, signifying a miraculous restoration. This highlights the power of God’s Word to bring life, hope, and restoration to a hopeless situation.

b. Restoration of Israel: The vision of the dry bones points to God’s promise to restore and revive His people. It represents the future restoration of the nation of Israel, their return from exile, and the renewal of their relationship with God. It signifies that even in the midst of the darkest and most lifeless circumstances, God can breathe life and hope.

  • Spiritual Renewal:The vision of the dry bones reminds us that even in our own lives, when we feel spiritually dry, lifeless, and hopeless, God has the power to bring about renewal and restoration. He can breathe new life into our spirits, reviving our faith, hope, and passion.
  • The Power of God’s Word:It also emphasizes the importance of the Word of God in our lives. Just as Ezekiel prophesied to the dry bones, we should immerse ourselves in God’s Word and allow it to speak life into our circumstances. The Bible is a source of comfort, guidance, and transformation.
  • Trusting in God’s Promises:The vision of the dry bones assures us that God is faithful to His promises. No matter how bleak our situation may seem, we can trust that God has the power to restore, revive, and bring hope. We should hold onto His promises and have faith in His ability to work miracles in our lives.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 37:2 presents a powerful vision of a valley of dry bones, symbolizing the spiritual desolation and hopelessness of the exiled Israelites. It points to God’s promise of restoration, emphasizing the power of His Word and His ability to bring life to even the most lifeless circumstances. The passage encourages us to seek spiritual renewal, trust in God’s promises, and rely on His Word for guidance and transformation in our lives.
