Listen to this article

“The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones.”

Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. The prophet Ezekiel was a priest who was taken captive to Babylon during the Babylonian exile. In this particular chapter, Ezekiel receives a vision from God, which is commonly known as the vision of the valley of dry bones.

The Hand of the LORD:In this verse, Ezekiel states that “the hand of the LORD was upon me.” This phrase signifies the divine power and guidance of God in Ezekiel’s life. It implies that God’s influence and authority were upon him, directing and leading him in the fulfillment of his prophetic ministry.

Carried Me Out in the Spirit of the LORD:The phrase “carried me out in the spirit of the LORD” indicates that Ezekiel was moved or transported by the power of the Holy Spirit. It implies that he was not physically present in the valley but was in a spiritual state or a vision. This highlights the supernatural nature of the encounter and emphasizes that Ezekiel was under the influence and guidance of God’s Spirit.

Set Me Down in the Midst of the Valley:Ezekiel describes being placed in the “midst of the valley which was full of bones.” This valley represents a scene of desolation and death. The bones mentioned are dry, signifying that they have been there for a long time and all life has left them. This imagery symbolizes the spiritual condition of the people of Israel during the Babylonian exile-a nation in despair, devoid of hope and life.

Key Lessons from Ezekiel 37:1:

  • Divine Intervention:The vision of Ezekiel being led by the hand of the LORD and carried in the Spirit of the LORD emphasizes the divine intervention in his life. It highlights that God is actively involved in the lives of His chosen servants, guiding and empowering them to carry out His purposes.
  • Supernatural Communication:The fact that Ezekiel was in a vision and transported to a specific location reveals the supernatural means through which God communicates His messages to His prophets. It emphasizes that God can reach His servants and reveal His will in extraordinary ways.
  • Symbolic Representation:The valley of dry bones symbolizes the spiritual condition of the Israelites during the exile. It serves as a powerful visual representation of hopelessness, despair, and the need for divine restoration.

Overall, Ezekiel 37:1 sets the stage for the remarkable vision that follows, where God reveals His plan to breathe new life into the dry bones, signifying the restoration and revival of His people. This chapter ultimately speaks to the power and faithfulness of God to bring life and transformation even in the midst of the most desolate circumstances.
