Ezekiel 36:38

“As the holy flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts; so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men: and they shall know that I am the LORD.”
The Promise of Divine Restoration

Ezekiel 36 stands as a profound prophetic chapter detailing God’s comprehensive restoration of His people. The Lord declares that His intervening salvation is for the vindication of His own holy name, demonstrating His holiness before the eyes of all nations. To achieve this, God promises not only a physical gathering of His people back to their land but also a deep spiritual transformation—cleansing them, giving them a new heart, and placing His Spirit within them.

The Imagery of the Holy Flock

Within this restorative framework, Ezekiel 36:38 introduces the striking imagery of the "holy flock." The Lord promises that the once desolate and waste cities will be filled with "flocks of men," comparing them to the vast flocks of sheep gathered in Jerusalem for solemn feasts. During these appointed festivals, immense numbers of unblemished sheep were brought into the city for worship and sacrifice.

By using this comparison, God signifies more than a massive numerical increase of the population. He highlights the sanctified, dedicated nature of these restored people. The multiplied inhabitants will not merely occupy the rebuilt cities; they will be a holy gathering, deeply consecrated to the Lord.

Knowing the Lord

The grand purpose of filling the waste cities with holy flocks of men is encapsulated in the concluding phrase: "and they shall know that I am the Lord." The sheer magnitude of the transformation—from barrenness and exile to teeming, sanctified life—serves as an undeniable testimony to God’s sovereign grace. This restoration stands as a perpetual witness that God faithfully keeps His covenant, sanctifies His name, and abundantly restores His people.
