Ezekiel 37:24

And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.

Ezekiel 37:24 (KJV)

This verse stands within Ezekiel’s vision of the valley of dry bones, where God promises to restore, reunite, and cleanse His people. The immediate setting is the divided kingdom of Israel and Judah, scattered in exile. God declares that He will bring them back to their own land and make them one nation under one king.

The name “David” here does not mean the historical king will be raised from the dead. It is a title for the coming Messiah, the Son of David, who would rule with the same heart for God. The phrase “one shepherd” points to a single ruler who will care for and lead the reunited people. In Christian understanding, this is Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for the sheep.

The verse also describes the character of the kingdom: the people “shall walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.” This is not a condition for entering the covenant but the fruit of God’s work within them. As Ezekiel 36:27 promises, God will put His Spirit within His people and cause them to walk in His statutes. Obedience flows from a transformed heart, not from human effort alone.

The promise of one shepherd echoes the New Testament teaching that Jesus gathers both Jews and Gentiles into one flock under His care (John 10:16). The unity of God’s people under Christ is a central theme, fulfilled in the church where believers from every nation are joined together in Him.

For believers today, this verse calls us to recognize Jesus as our King and Shepherd. It reminds us that true spiritual leadership under God’s appointed Shepherd leads to holiness and faithful living. We are to walk in His judgments and observe His statutes, not to earn His favor, but because His Spirit enables us to obey from the heart.

Ezekiel 37:24 gives us a vision of restoration and unity under Christ. It assures us that God’s redemptive plan is sure: He will gather His people, give them one Shepherd, and write His law on their hearts. Our part is to trust His work and live in joyful obedience to His Word.
