Ezekiel 38:16

Listen to this article

And thou shalt come vp against my people of Israel, as a cloud to couer the land; it shall be in the latter dayes, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes. Ezekiel 38:16 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and this particular verse is part of a prophecy concerning a future event. In this chapter, Ezekiel prophesies about a great battle against the people of Israel, led by a figure called Gog.

Gog and Magog: Gog is generally understood to represent a future leader or nation that will rise against the people of Israel. The term “Gog and Magog” is used in the Bible to symbolize the enemies of God’s people. It is important to note that the specific identification of Gog and Magog is a matter of interpretation, and various views exist regarding their identities.

Coming against Israel: The verse states that Gog will come up against Israel “as a cloud.” This imagery suggests a vast and overwhelming force. The passage emphasizes the seriousness of the threat rather than naming Israel as “my people.”

And thou shalt come up against them as a cloud, that the land shall be desolate, and the fire of a great furnace shall devour them.

Latter days: The phrase “in the latter days” appears in the preceding verse (Ezekiel 38:15), indicating an eschatological or end‑times context. The reference points to a future period of significant events and fulfillment of prophecy.

God’s purpose: The verse reveals that God will bring Gog against Israel so that the nations (“the heathen”) may recognize Him. The purpose is portrayed as revealing God’s sovereignty to the nations rather than any notion of God being “sanctified” through Gog.

Spiritual significance: This verse highlights the sovereignty of God over the nations and His desire to be known. It emphasizes that God will use even the enemies of His people to accomplish His purposes.

The fulfillment of this prophecy will serve as a testimony to the nations, demonstrating God’s power, sovereignty, and faithfulness.

Overall, Ezekiel 38:16 speaks of a future time when a powerful enemy will rise against Israel, but God will ultimately use this event to reveal Himself and display His glory before the nations. The verse underscores God’s faithfulness to His people and His overarching plan for the world’s redemption.
