Ezekiel 38:23

Thus will I magnifie my selfe, and sanctifie my selfe, and I will be knowen in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord. Ezekiel 38:23 (KJV)

“And I will magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.” This declaration comes within Ezekiel’s prophetic vision of a future invasion of Israel by Gog and his allies. Ezekiel, a prophet called to witness both judgment and restoration, records God’s promise that the coming events will reveal divine power to the whole world.

When God says He will magnify Himself, He means He will display His greatness in a striking and unmistakable way. To sanctify Himself is to set Himself apart as holy, emphasizing His unique nature as the one true God. The added phrase “glorified among the heathen” expands the scope, indicating that His fame will spread beyond Israel to all peoples.

The verse also promises that God will be known in the eyes of many nations. Through the dramatic intervention that follows the Gog invasion, the nations will witness God’s sovereignty, power, and holiness. Their observation of these events will lead them to recognize Him as the supreme ruler, fulfilling the purpose of His magnification, sanctification, and glorification.

The concluding statement, “they shall know that I am the LORD,” underscores the ultimate goal of these revelations: that every nation, whether Israelite or Gentile, will acknowledge the Lordship of the Almighty. The prophetic narrative makes clear that the divine display is not merely for Israel’s benefit but for the entire world’s acknowledgment of God’s authority.

Application: Ezekiel 38:23 reminds believers that God’s sovereignty extends over all history and geography. It encourages us to trust that God will be revealed and honored among the nations, and it calls us to join in proclaiming His greatness, confident that the world will ultimately recognize Him as the Lord.
