When thou hast made an ende of cleansing it, thou shalt offer a yong bullocke without blemish, and a ramme out of the flocke, without blemish. Ezekiel 43:23 (KJV)

And when the priest shall have cleansed the altar, he shall offer a bullock for a sin‑offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, without blemish.

Context: Ezekiel was a prophet who lived during the time of the Babylonian exile. In this vision, God showed Ezekiel a detailed description of the future temple and its rituals. Ezekiel 43 describes the return of the glory of the Lord to the temple.

Cleansing the altar: In the preceding verses, Ezekiel receives instructions from God about the dedication and purification of the altar. The altar represents the place of sacrifice and worship. Before the offerings could be made, the altar needed to be cleansed to restore its sanctity.

The offering of a bullock: Once the cleansing of the altar was complete, the next step was to offer a bullock without blemish. This was a significant offering and represented the atoning sacrifice. The requirement for the animal to be without blemish emphasizes the importance of offering the best and purest sacrifice to God.

The offering of a ram: Along with the bullock, a ram without blemish was to be offered. The ram was another important sacrificial animal, often associated with dedication and consecration. The ram’s offering symbolized surrendering oneself entirely to God’s service and obeying His commands.

Symbolic significance: These offerings and rituals described in Ezekiel’s vision had symbolic meaning. They pointed towards the future fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who would be the ultimate and perfect sacrifice for the sins of humanity. The unblemished animals foreshadowed the sinless nature of Jesus, who would give Himself as the perfect Lamb of God.

Lessons for believers today: While the rituals described in Ezekiel’s vision were specific to the Old Testament temple, there are lessons that can be applied to believers today. It reminds us of the importance of approaching God with reverence and offering Him our best in worship and service. It also highlights the need for purity and dedication in our lives as we strive to live in obedience to God.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 43:23 in the King James Version describes the offerings that were to be made after the cleansing of the altar. These offerings symbolized atonement, dedication, and consecration. They foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who would offer Himself as the perfect Lamb of God. As believers, we can learn from this passage to approach God with reverence, offer Him our best, and live in purity and dedication to His will.
