Ezekiel 46:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:57

“And in the feasts and in the solemnities the meat offering shall be an ephah to a bullock, and an ephah to a ram, and to the lambs as he is able to give, and an hin of oil to an ephah.”

Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and it contains visions and messages from God to the prophet Ezekiel. The specific verse, Ezekiel 46:11, is part of a larger section in which the prophet is describing the regulations for offerings, sacrifices, and worship practices in the future temple of Jerusalem.

Feasts and solemnities:The verse mentions “feasts” and “solemnities.” In the Old Testament, there were various religious festivals and appointed times when the people of Israel would gather to worship and offer sacrifices to God. These feasts and solemnities were important occasions for the Israelites to commemorate significant events in their history and to express their devotion to God.

Meat offerings:The verse speaks about meat offerings or grain offerings. These offerings were a type of sacrifice where grains, such as wheat or barley, were presented to God as an act of worship. The purpose of these offerings was to demonstrate thanksgiving, dedication, and the acknowledgment of God’s provision.

Measurement:The verse specifies the quantity of the meat offering for different animals. An “ephah” was a standard unit of dry measurement in the ancient Near East. In this case, an ephah of grain was to be offered for a bullock, a ram, and as much as one was able to give for the lambs. This demonstrates that the offering was proportionate to the size and value of the animal being sacrificed.

Oil offering:The verse also mentions an “hin of oil to an ephah.” The hin was a liquid measure, and it represented about one gallon or 3.8 liters. The oil was used for anointing and symbolized the presence and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. The offering of oil emphasized the importance of consecration and dedication to God.

Principles and symbolism:This verse highlights several principles and symbolic meanings. It emphasizes the importance of worship and the observance of religious feasts and solemnities. It also teaches the principles of proportionality, giving according to one’s ability, and offering the best of what one has. The measurement of offerings indicates the need for order, consistency, and fairness in worship practices.

Application:While the regulations described in Ezekiel’s vision were specific to the temple worship in his time, there are spiritual lessons that can be applied today. We can learn about the importance of setting aside dedicated times for worship, expressing gratitude, and giving our best to God. It also reminds us of the significance of the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives and the need for consecration and dedication to God in all that we do.

  • Remember, when studying the Bible, it is essential to consider the broader context and consult other biblical passages to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the message and its application.

Please note that interpretations of specific verses may vary among individuals and theological traditions.
