Ezekiel 48:16
And these shall bee the measures thereof, the North side foure thousand and fiue hundred, and the South side foure thousand and fiue hundred, and on the East side foure thousand, and fiue hundred, and the West side foure thousand and fiue hundred. Ezekiel 48:16 (KJV)
The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. Ezekiel was a prophet who was taken captive to Babylon along with the exiled Israelites. This verse is part of a larger section in which Ezekiel receives a vision of the future division of the land among the twelve tribes of Israel.
In this particular verse Ezekiel is describing the measurements of the city that will be named “The LORD is there,” a holy portion allocated for the priests, Levites, and the general population. The city itself is not divided into twelve portions for the tribes; instead the surrounding land is divided among the twelve tribes. Each side of the city measures four thousand and five hundred cubits, and the equal measurements on all four sides are often interpreted as indicating fairness and equality in the division among the tribes.
The number four represents completeness and wholeness, while the number five signifies grace and God’s favour. The repeated use of four and five emphasizes the perfect and gracious nature of the future city and the allocation of land.
While this verse specifically addresses the physical division of land in the future Jerusalem, it also carries spiritual lessons for believers today. The equality and fairness demonstrated in the division of land can remind us of God’s justice and impartiality. God is a God of order and equity, and He desires that we live in harmony and fairness with one another.
The division of land among the twelve tribes highlights both unity and diversity. Though each tribe had its own portion, they were all part of the same community and shared a common purpose. Similarly, in the body of Christ believers come from diverse backgrounds and have different roles, yet we are united in our faith in Jesus Christ and our purpose to glorify God.
The vision points to a time of restoration and renewal for Israel. While the specific measurements and tribal divisions have not been historically documented as fulfilled after the Babylonian exile, many see this passage as pointing forward to a future fulfillment in the millennial kingdom when Jesus Christ reigns on earth. This passage therefore reminds believers of God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises.
In conclusion, Ezekiel 48:16 provides details about the measurements of the future city in a vision received by the prophet Ezekiel. The equal measurements on all four sides highlight fairness and equality in the division of land among the twelve tribes of Israel. This verse serves as a reminder of God’s justice, unity, and His faithfulness in fulfilling His promises.
