Ezekiel 48:17

And the suburbs of the city shall be toward the north two hundred and fifty, and toward the south two hundred and fifty, and toward the east two hundred and fifty, and toward the west two hundred and fifty.

Ezekiel 48:17 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. In this verse, the prophet describes the division of the land among the twelve tribes of Israel in the restored Israel during the Messianic era. This division includes the city and its surrounding areas.

The number 250 is mentioned four times, representing the division of the land into four equal portions: north, south, east, and west. It signifies the equitable distribution of land among the tribes of Israel. The term “suburbs” refers to open land or pastureland around the city, distinct from the city’s dwelling area. This measurement is added to the city’s main measurement of four thousand and five hundred on each side, making a total of five thousand on each side, as seen in the surrounding context.

The concept of open land around a city is also seen in the instructions for Levitical cities in Numbers 35, where suburbs were to be provided for their animals and substance. This connection highlights the practical purpose of such space in the divine plan.

The land represents the inheritance and possession of the tribes of Israel, symbolizing the blessings and promises of God to His people. The city mentioned refers to the future city of Jerusalem during the Messianic era, a vision of the future restoration of Israel when the Messiah will reign and rule over the nation. This verse teaches us the importance of fairness, justice, and equality in our dealings with one another. Just as the land was divided equally among the tribes, we should strive for fairness and equality in our interactions with others, treating them with love and respect.

This verse points to the future fulfillment of God’s promises to His people. In the Messianic era, Jesus Christ will reign as the ultimate King over all the earth, and Israel will be restored. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness to His covenant and His plans for the future. The equitable distribution of land serves as a reminder of God’s promises and His faithfulness, and we can apply the principles of fairness and equality to our own lives.
