Ezekiel 6:1

And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

Ezekiel 6:1 (KJV)

Ezekiel was a priest and prophet among the Israelites exiled in Babylon during the sixth century BC. Before this verse, God had shown Ezekiel visions of the people’s rebellion and idolatry, warning of coming judgment. Now the Lord speaks again to His prophet.

The phrase “the word of the LORD came unto me” is a recurring formula in Ezekiel (see Ezekiel 7:1, 12:1, 21:1, 22:1, 25:1). It marks a new divine revelation and shows that Ezekiel’s message did not originate from his own thoughts but came directly from God. This gives his prophecy divine authority and demonstrates the intimate communication between God and His chosen servant.

This introductory verse sets the stage for the prophecy against the mountains of Israel in Ezekiel 6:2-14, where the high places of idolatry are condemned. The pattern of God speaking to His prophets points to the broader biblical theme of God revealing Himself to humanity, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh (John 1:14).

God still speaks through His written Word. Just as Ezekiel received and delivered God’s message faithfully, believers today are called to be open to God’s word and ready to respond to His leading. The verse encourages us to treat Scripture as God’s direct communication, carrying authority and demanding a response.

How attentive are we to God’s voice? Ezekiel’s example reminds us that true prophecy and true obedience begin with listening to God. May we, like Ezekiel, be vessels through whom God’s message is conveyed to others.
