Ezekiel 7:17

Listen to this article

“All hands shall be feeble, and all knees shall be weak as water.”

Context:The book of Ezekiel contains prophecies and messages of judgment against Israel and other nations. In chapter 7, Ezekiel delivers a message of imminent judgment upon the people of Israel because of their rebellion and idolatry. The verse you mentioned is part of this prophecy, emphasizing the physical and emotional weakness that would come upon the people in the face of their impending calamity.

Symbolic language:The phrase “All hands shall be feeble, and all knees shall be weak as water” is a poetic and symbolic expression describing the people’s utter despair and loss of strength. It portrays the devastating impact of God’s judgment, causing physical and emotional weakness among the people.

Spiritual significance:a. Judgment and consequences: The verse highlights the consequences of disobedience and unfaithfulness to God. The people of Israel had turned away from God and engaged in idolatry and wickedness. As a result, they would experience the devastating effects of God’s judgment.

b. Powerlessness before God: The imagery of feeble hands and weak knees symbolizes the complete helplessness of the people before the righteous judgment of God. It emphasizes the inability of human strength and worldly resources to withstand the divine punishment.

Application:

  • Importance of obedience:Ezekiel 7 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God. It underscores the reality that rebellion and idolatry will ultimately lead to undesirable consequences in our lives.
  • Trusting in God’s strength:The verse reminds us that our human strength is limited, and relying solely on our own abilities can lead to disappointment and weakness. Instead, we should put our trust in God, who is all-powerful and can provide strength and support in times of difficulty.
  • God’s justice and mercy:While this verse emphasizes the severity of God’s judgment, it also highlights His justice. God is not indifferent to sin and rebellion, but He also extends mercy and offers a way of redemption through repentance. It serves as a call for individuals to turn back to God and seek His forgiveness and restoration.

Remember that studying the Bible involves exploring the historical context, symbolism, and broader theological themes. It is also essential to consider the entire chapter or book to fully understand the message being conveyed.
