Ezekiel 7:15
The sword is without, and the pestilence and the famine within: he that is in the field shall die with the sword; and he that is in the city, famine and pestilence shall devour him.
Ezekiel 7:15 (KJV)
Context
The book of Ezekiel contains prophecies from God to the Israelites exiled in Babylon. Ezekiel 7 is a chapter of judgment against Israel and Jerusalem for their persistent disobedience and idolatry.
Meaning
The sword represents warfare and violence, indicating that destruction and death would come upon the people. Pestilence refers to widespread diseases and epidemics that would cause further suffering and death. Famine represents severe scarcity of food, leading to starvation and distress. The field and the city show that people living in both rural and urban areas would experience the devastating consequences of these calamities. The verse emphasizes the inescapable nature of God’s judgment: those outside the city walls face the sword, while those inside face famine and pestilence. No one can flee to safety, for judgment surrounds them on every side.
Biblical connections
This judgment echoes the earlier oracle in Ezekiel 6:12, which similarly describes death by sword, famine, and pestilence for those far off, near, and besieged. Together these passages reinforce the theme that God’s judgment is comprehensive and unavoidable. The language is symbolic and vivid, using the sword, pestilence, and famine as instruments of divine wrath.
