Ezekiel 7:22

Listen to this article

“My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute my secret place: for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it.”

Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and the prophet Ezekiel was called by God to deliver messages of judgment and restoration to the people of Israel during their exile in Babylon. In chapter 7, Ezekiel pronounces a message of imminent judgment upon Jerusalem due to the people’s persistent disobedience and idolatry.

Turning away from God:In this verse, God declares that He will turn His face away from the people of Israel. This signifies the withdrawal of His favour and protection. It is a significant consequence of their continued rebellion against Him. When God turns away, it indicates a severe judgment and a lack of divine intervention in their affairs.

Polluting the secret place:The “secret place” mentioned in this verse refers to the sanctuary or the temple of God in Jerusalem. It was the place where God’s presence dwelt among His people. The people of Israel had defiled this holy place through their wicked actions and idolatry. The phrase “pollute my secret place” conveys the idea of desecration and defilement of what was meant to be a sacred space.

Robbers entering and defiling:As a result of God’s withdrawal and the people’s sin, robbers and invaders would enter the sanctuary, desecrating it further. This imagery emphasizes the imminent invasion and destruction that would come upon Jerusalem. It portrays the violation of what should have been a place of worship and reverence for God.

Spiritual significance:This verse highlights the consequences of persistent sin and rebellion against God. When people turn away from Him, His presence departs, leaving them vulnerable to destruction and defilement. It serves as a reminder that the holiness of God’s dwelling place should be respected and cherished.

Application:As believers today, we can learn from this verse by recognising the importance of maintaining a close relationship with God and honouring His presence in our lives. When we persistently turn away from Him and engage in sinful actions, we risk losing His favour and experiencing the negative consequences of our choices. It reminds us to guard our hearts and strive for holiness, understanding the significance of the sacred spaces where God chooses to dwell.

  • Remember that studying the Bible in its entirety, considering the context and related passages, is essential for a comprehensive understanding of God’s Word.
