Ezekiel 7:26

Mischief shall come upon mischief, and rumour shall be upon rumour; then shall they seek a vision of the prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients.

Context

Ezekiel prophesied during the Babylonian exile, after the Babylonians had taken many Israelites captive. He warned the exiles that Jerusalem and the Temple would be destroyed because of the nation’s persistent idolatry and rebellion against God. This verse describes the final stage of that judgment, when calamity and confusion would overwhelm the people.

Meaning

“Mischief shall come upon mischief” means one disaster will follow another in a relentless, cascading series. The Hebrew word can also be translated “calamity” or “disaster,” showing that the troubles are not random but are the outworking of divine judgment. “Rumour shall be upon rumour” points to a state of chaos and fear, as reports of approaching danger multiply and leave the people uncertain and shaken.

In their distress, the people will seek a vision from a prophet, hoping for guidance and relief. Yet no true vision will be given.
