And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass.

Context

Ezra 10 records a serious problem among the Jews who returned from Babylon. Many men, including priests, had married foreign women. This broke God’s command in Deuteronomy 7:3-4, which warned that such marriages could turn the people away from Him. The whole community agreed to correct this sin.

The priests named in this verse “gave their hands,” meaning they made a solemn promise. They pledged to send away their foreign wives. This was a costly and painful step, but it showed true repentance. They also admitted their guilt and offered a ram for their trespass. According to Leviticus 5:14-19 and 6:6, a ram without blemish was the required offering for a guilt offering. By doing this, they followed the law and sought atonement for their sin.
