Ezra 6:7
Let the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place.
Ezra 6:7 (KJV)
Context
The book of Ezra records the return of the Israelites from Babylonian captivity and their efforts to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. After years of opposition and delays, the construction had halted. During the reign of King Darius of Persia, the Jews received a decree that allowed them to resume the work.
Ezra 6:1-5 describes how King Darius was presented with a scroll containing the decree issued by Cyrus, the previous king of Persia, which permitted the Jews to rebuild the temple. After examining the records, Darius reaffirmed Cyrus’ decree and extended his support for the project.
Meaning
In Ezra 6:7, King Darius addresses his command to the officials and governors in the region, instructing them to leave the work of rebuilding the house of God alone. He specifically mentions the governor of the Jews and the elders, granting them permission to proceed with the construction. The phrase “in his place” indicates that the temple was to be rebuilt on its original site, preserving the sacred location chosen by God.
Darius not only confirms the original decree of Cyrus but goes a step further by ordering that anyone who hinders the construction face severe consequences. In Ezra 6:8-12, he declares that timber and expenses required for the project should be provided from the royal treasury. This decree provided protection and support for the Jewish community in their efforts to restore their place of worship.
Biblical connections
Ezra 6:7 highlights the intervention of King Darius and his recognition of the Jews’ right to rebuild the temple. This decree demonstrated God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise to restore His people and reestablish worship in Jerusalem. It also shows how God can move the heart of a pagan king to ensure the continuation of His work, a theme seen throughout Scripture.
Application
As believers, we can draw several lessons from Ezra 6:7. It reminds us that God has the power to turn the hearts of kings and rulers in favor of His people. It also teaches us the importance of God’s timing, as the rebuilding of the temple occurred when God’s appointed time had come.
Moreover, Ezra 6:7 emphasizes the significance of unity and cooperation among God’s people. The governor of the Jews and the elders worked together to accomplish the task given to them. This encourages us to work collaboratively within our Christian communities to fulfill God’s purposes.
Lastly, Ezra 6:7 encourages us to be faithful and steadfast in our own spiritual work. Just as the Jews were commanded to continue building despite opposition, we should persevere in fulfilling the purposes and plans God has for us, trusting in His provision and protection.
Reflection
Ezra 6:7 demonstrates the divine intervention and support the Jewish community received from King Darius to resume the construction of the temple. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness, the importance of unity, and the need for perseverance in our spiritual endeavours.
