Ezra 6:9

And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:

Ezra 6:9 (KJV)

Ezra 6:9 comes from a royal decree by King Darius of Persia. The decree not only allowed the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem but also commanded that the priests receive everything needed for its daily worship.

The verse lists specific provisions: young bullocks, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings, along with wheat, salt, wine, and oil. These were to be given “day by day without fail” according to the appointment of the priests at Jerusalem. The priests determined the exact quantities and types of offerings required by the law. The king’s command was to supply them fully, ensuring nothing was lacking for God’s service.

The animals and grain correspond to the Levitical law. Bulls, rams, and lambs were used for burnt offerings (Leviticus 1:2, 10, 14). Wheat or fine flour was for the grain offering, salt for every offering, wine for drink offerings, and oil for various offerings and anointing. This decree shows a pagan king supporting the worship of Yahweh, demonstrating God’s sovereignty over earthly rulers to fulfill His purposes.

This verse reminds believers that God’s work, including worship, requires tangible resources. Just as the king provided for the priests, God’s people today are called to support worship generously and consistently. The command to provide “day by day without fail” underscores the importance of regular, unceasing worship and the practical support needed for it. It also encourages trust that God can move the hearts of even foreign rulers to provide for His people, reminding us that all provision ultimately comes from Him.

Consider how you can support the worship of God in your own community. Are you giving consistently and generously so that nothing is lacking for His service? Just as God provided for the priests through a king, He can provide for His work through you. Let this verse inspire you to be faithful in your giving, knowing that God honors those who honor Him.
