Ezra 8:31

Then wee departed from the riuer of Ahaua, on the twelfth day of the first moneth, to goe vnto Ierusalem; and the hand of our God was vpon vs, and hee deliuered vs from the hand of the enemie, and of such as lay in wait by the way. Ezra 8:31 (KJV)

The book of Ezra records the events that followed the Babylonian exile. After King Cyrus of Persia issued a decree permitting the Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple, Ezra, a scribe and priest, led a later group of returning exiles under the reign of King Artaxerxes I. In Ezra 8 we read about Ezra’s journey from Babylon to Jerusalem.

The verse highlights the specific moment of departure: the exiles left the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month. The river of Ahava was the gathering point in the region of Babylon, marking the precise time and place from which the people set out for Jerusalem.

Ezra declares that “the hand of our God was upon us.” This phrase signifies divine guidance, protection, and favour throughout the journey. It underscores the belief that God was actively involved in the affairs of His people, watching over every step of their travel.

The passage also records that God “delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.” While traveling through potentially hostile territory, the exiles faced threats from enemies who might have sought to harm or hinder them. Yet God intervened, shielding them from those adversaries and ensuring safe passage.

The verse calls believers to acknowledge God’s hand in their own lives. Just as the exiles recognized divine guidance and protection, we are urged to be aware of His presence in our daily journeys. Trust in God’s deliverance is emphasized; even when we encounter challenges, opposition, or obstacles, we can rely on Him as the ultimate protector. Gratitude for God’s faithfulness is also encouraged. Recognising and thanking Him for His favour and protection cultivates a thankful heart. Overall, Ezra 8:31 reminds us of God’s active involvement, His guidance, and His faithfulness in protecting and delivering His people, inviting us to trust in His provision as we walk our own paths.
