Ezra 9:3

Posted on 18 May at 15:22

“And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied.”

Context:To understand the significance of Ezra 9:3, it’s essential to consider the context of the verse. The book of Ezra describes the period when the Israelites returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. Ezra, a priest and scribe, played a crucial role in the spiritual restoration of the people and the reestablishment of God’s law.

The Issue at Hand:In the preceding verses, Ezra discovered that some of the Israelites, including the priests and Levites, had intermarried with the surrounding pagan nations. This was a direct violation of God’s commandment for His people to remain separate and not intermarry with foreigners who would lead them astray.

Ezra’s Response:When Ezra learned about the intermarriage, he was deeply distressed and shocked. His immediate response was to tear his garment and mantle, which was a traditional expression of grief and mourning. It signified his sorrow over the people’s disobedience and the defilement of God’s holy people. Additionally, Ezra plucked off the hair from his head and beard, which was another symbolic act of distress and mourning.

Astonied:The term “astonied” means to be astonished, greatly dismayed, or deeply troubled. Upon hearing about the intermarriage, Ezra was overwhelmed by the severity of the situation and the spiritual implications for the people of Israel. His reaction reflected his genuine concern for the people and his zeal for God’s holiness.

  • Zeal for God’s Holiness:Ezra’s response demonstrates his deep love for God and his desire to see His people walk in obedience. As believers, we should also be zealous for God’s holiness and deeply grieved when we see sin and compromise in our lives and the lives of others.
  • The Consequences of Disobedience:Intermarriage with pagan nations was not merely a matter of cultural assimilation but a spiritual compromise that could lead the Israelites away from God. This teaches us the importance of guarding ourselves against influences that may lead us away from God’s truth and principles.
  • Prayer and Repentance:After his initial shock, Ezra prayed and confessed the sins of the people to God. This demonstrates the significance of prayer and repentance in times of spiritual crisis. When we encounter sin or disobedience, we should turn to God in prayer, seek His guidance, and confess our sins.
  • Reverence for God’s Word:Ezra’s reaction also highlights the importance of God’s Word. His deep distress stemmed from the realization that the people had disregarded God’s commandments. As believers, we should revere and honor God’s Word, allowing it to shape our lives and guide our decisions.
