Galatians 5:17

Listen to this article

“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”

Context:The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Galatians to address the issue of legalism and false teachings that were infiltrating the Galatian churches. In this particular verse, Paul highlights the struggle between the flesh and the Spirit, emphasising the importance of living by the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The Struggle between Flesh and Spirit:The verse begins by acknowledging the inherent conflict between the flesh and the Spirit. The flesh represents our sinful nature and worldly desires, while the Spirit represents the Holy Spirit, who guides believers towards godly living. This conflict reflects the tension within every Christian between their old self and their new life in Christ.

Contrary Nature:Paul emphasises that the flesh and the Spirit are contrary to one another. They have opposing desires and goals. The flesh seeks to gratify sinful desires and pursue worldly pleasures, while the Spirit prompts us towards holiness, righteousness, and godliness. This contrast highlights the need for believers to constantly choose between the desires of the flesh and the leading of the Spirit.

Inability to Do as You Would:Paul states that due to this conflict, believers are unable to do the things they would. This means that even though believers desire to live according to the Spirit and follow God’s will, the presence of the flesh creates a hindrance. It often leads to disobedience and struggles in living a consistently righteous life.

Dependence on the Holy Spirit:Recognising this struggle, believers must rely on the Holy Spirit’s power and guidance to overcome the desires of the flesh. The Holy Spirit empowers us to resist temptation, crucify the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:24), and live in obedience to God’s commands.

Application:Galatians 5:17 serves as a reminder that the Christian life involves a daily battle against the flesh. Here are some practical applications:

  • Seek God’s Spirit:Through prayer, study of God’s Word, and fellowship with other believers, cultivate a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit. Invite Him to lead, empower, and transform your life.
  • Walk in the Spirit:Make a conscious effort to align your thoughts, attitudes, and actions with the leading of the Holy Spirit. Choose to live according to God’s principles and seek His guidance in decision-making.
  • Resist Temptation:When confronted with sinful desires, rely on the Holy Spirit’s strength to resist and overcome them. Remember that victory over the flesh comes through the power of Christ working in you.
  • Embrace God’s Grace:Recognise that none of us can live a righteous life on our own. Depend on God’s grace, knowing that even when you stumble, His forgiveness and transformative power are available to you.

Remember, the struggle between the flesh and the Spirit is an ongoing process. By submitting to the Holy Spirit and allowing Him to transform your heart and mind, you can experience spiritual growth, victory over sin, and a closer relationship with God.
