Galatians 5:16
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Galatians 5:16 (KJV)
Context
The apostle Paul wrote the book of Galatians to the churches in Galatia, addressing the problem of legalism and emphasizing the freedom believers have in Christ. Galatians 5:16 is part of Paul’s exhortation to live by the Spirit rather than according to the desires of the flesh. The verse sets the stage for the following verse, Galatians 5:17, which describes the ongoing conflict between the Spirit and the flesh.
Meaning
The phrase “Walk in the Spirit” means living in accordance with the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit. It implies a continual reliance on the Spirit’s leading and a deliberate choice to follow God’s will. As believers, we are called to allow the Holy Spirit to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. The “lust of the flesh” refers to the desires and cravings of our sinful nature, encompassing any sinful inclination or temptation that arises from our fallen human nature. These desires can lead us away from God’s will and hinder our spiritual growth.
The verse ends with a promise: “and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” When we walk in the Spirit, depending on the Holy Spirit’s power, we are enabled to resist and overcome the sinful desires of the flesh. This does not mean we will never be tempted or struggle, but it assures us that through the Spirit’s empowerment we can live victoriously over sin.
Biblical connections
Walking in the Spirit involves making the Spirit-inspired Word the rule of our behavior, for it is the standard of faith and practice. The Spirit leads us in the way of holiness and righteousness. This teaching connects with the contrast Paul draws in Galatians 5:19-23 between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. By walking in the Spirit, we cultivate the fruit of the Spirit rather than indulging the works of the flesh.
Application
Galatians 5:16 teaches us several important lessons:
Dependence on the Holy Spirit: We need to acknowledge our dependence on the Holy Spirit in our daily lives. Through prayer, studying God’s Word, and seeking the Spirit’s guidance, we can rely on Him to help us live in obedience to God’s commands.
Choosing God’s Way: Walking in the Spirit requires a conscious decision to align our will with God’s will. It involves surrendering our desires and submitting to the Spirit’s leading. This choice involves saying “no” to the fleshly desires that oppose God’s purposes for our lives.
Overcoming Sin: By walking in the Spirit, we can experience victory over the power of sin. The Holy Spirit equips us to resist temptation, flee from evil, and live holy lives. Our focus should be on cultivating the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) rather than indulging in the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21).
Pursuing Transformation: Walking in the Spirit leads to transformation. As we yield to the Spirit’s work within us, our character, attitudes, and behaviors begin to align with God’s righteousness. We become more Christlike, displaying love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Reflection
Galatians 5:16 encourages believers to walk in the Spirit and promises victory over the lusts of the flesh. By relying on the Holy Spirit, making choices that align with God’s will, and seeking transformation, we can experience the freedom and abundant life God has called us to live.
