Galatians 6:16

Posted on 18 May at 14:30
Listen to this article

“And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.”

Galatians 6:16 (KJV) states:And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

Historical Context:The book of Galatians was written by the Apostle Paul and addressed to the churches in the region of Galatia. The letter was composed to counter the influence of false teachers who were promoting a distorted gospel, emphasizing the need for circumcision and adherence to the Mosaic law for salvation. In Galatians 6:16, Paul is wrapping up his letter, emphasizing that those who walk according to the true gospel are to be blessed with peace and mercy.

  • The "Rule" Paul Refers to:

The phrase "as many as walk according to this rule" refers to those who live their lives in accordance with the true gospel message that Paul has been expounding upon throughout his letter. Paul had been arguing against the necessity of circumcision and the observance of the Jewish law for salvation. Instead, he emphasized that salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ alone. The "rule" Paul is referring to is the principle of justification by faith in Christ, not by works of the law.

Peace and Mercy:Paul pronounces a blessing of peace and mercy upon those who walk according to the true gospel. This signifies the spiritual benefits that believers receive when they embrace the gospel message of salvation by faith in Christ alone. Peace refers to the reconciliation with God and the inner peace that comes from knowing one’s sins are forgiven and having a restored relationship with the Creator. Mercy speaks of God’s compassionate and forgiving nature, extending His grace to those who trust in Christ.

The Israel of God:Paul concludes the verse by mentioning "the Israel of God." Here, he is likely referring to the spiritual descendants of Abraham, who are now the true people of God through faith in Christ. In the New Testament, the term "Israel" is often used metaphorically to describe believers, both Jewish and Gentile, who have been grafted into God’s family through faith. This emphasizes the spiritual unity and equality of all believers in Christ, regardless of their ethnic background.

Overall, Galatians 6:16 emphasizes the importance of living in accordance with the true gospel message of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ. Those who do so can expect to receive peace and mercy from God, and they are part of the spiritual Israel, the people of God. This verse reminds believers that their identity is rooted in Christ, and it emphasizes the grace and blessings available to those who embrace the true gospel.
