Galatians 6:17

From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.

Galatians 6:17 (KJV)

This verse concludes Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia, a region of Asia Minor. False teachers had been demanding circumcision and strict adherence to the Mosaic law for salvation, distorting the gospel of grace. Throughout the letter, Paul defends justification by faith in Christ and urges believers to walk in the Spirit, bear one another’s burdens, and sow to the Spirit rather than to the flesh.

When Paul declares, “From henceforth let no man trouble me,” he is not seeking isolation but affirming his unwavering commitment to the gospel despite opposition. He had faced intense criticism and personal attacks from those who opposed his teaching of salvation by grace. His statement is a resolute refusal to be swayed or intimidated by such adversaries.

He continues, “for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.” The Greek word translated “marks” is stigmata, which referred to brands or scars, often used of slaves or devotees of a god. Paul’s marks are the physical scars and wounds he endured in service to Christ. While some have speculated about a literal stigmata, this view is not widely accepted; the language is best understood as a visible testimony to his dedication to Christ and his belonging to Jesus.

Paul’s words echo the broader theme of suffering for Christ’s sake. In 2 Corinthians 4:10, he speaks of “always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus,” showing that his physical afflictions were a sign of his union with Christ in suffering and his faithful service.

This verse challenges believers to recognize that genuine devotion often brings opposition and suffering. It calls us to stand firm in faith, even when trials arise, and to examine whether our lives bear the marks of true commitment—sacrifice, rejection, and hardship for the sake of the gospel. Like Paul, we are invited to let our lives testify to the grace we have received, trusting that such marks glorify the Lord Jesus.

Galatians 6:17 underscores Paul’s steadfastness and his willingness to endure physical suffering as evidence of his devotion. It encourages every Christian to remain resolute amid persecution, to view hardships as a badge of Christ’s work in us, and to ensure that our conduct continually reflects the gospel of grace.
