Genesis 11:23

And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

Genesis 11:23 (KJV)

Genesis 11 traces the family line from Shem, one of Noah’s sons, to Abram, who later became Abraham. This list connects the generations after the flood to the man through whom God would form the nation of Israel. The verse about Serug is one small link in that chain.

Serug was the son of Reu and the father of Nahor, which made him the grandfather of Abraham. The verse tells us that after Nahor was born, Serug lived two hundred more years and had other sons and daughters. The Bible does not give us any details about those children or about Serug’s own deeds. His total lifespan was 230 years, as we learn from the previous verse, which says he was thirty years old when Nahor was born.

Serug also appears in the genealogy of Jesus Christ in Luke 3:35, showing that the line from Shem to Abraham continued through Serug and eventually led to the Savior. The mention of “sons and daughters” is a common phrase in Genesis, reminding us that these genealogies are not just lists of names but records of real families. The gradual shortening of human lifespans in this chapter also stands in contrast to the earlier patriarchs, showing a change in the world after the flood.

Serug’s life may seem ordinary, yet God included his name in Scripture. This teaches us that God works through everyday people, not only through famous heroes. A person’s role in God’s plan may be quiet and unrecorded in detail, but it is still part of His purpose. We can serve faithfully in our own families and communities, trusting that God sees and values our part.

The verse does not tell us about Serug’s character or choices. It simply records that he lived, had children, and died. Yet his place in the line to Christ shows that God was preserving a specific family through history. This should encourage us to trust that God is at work even in the ordinary spans of life, and that He keeps His promises across many generations.
