Genesis 18:17
And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
Genesis 18:17 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the narrative where the Lord visits Abraham near the oaks of Mamre. In the preceding verses, three men appear to Abraham, who offers them hospitality. It becomes evident that one of the men is the Lord Himself, while the other two are angels. The verse serves as a bridge between the promise of a son for Sarah and the impending judgment upon the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. The Lord pauses to ask a rhetorical question regarding whether He should hide His intentions from Abraham. God already knows that He wants to reveal His plan, but this question provides an opportunity to engage in a dialogue and express His purposes.
Meaning
The Lord’s question reveals the extraordinary intimacy and special relationship He has with Abraham. He desires to share His plans not out of necessity, but out of a deep relationship, showing that God desires an intimate and communicative relationship with His people. He views Abraham as a trusted friend and confidant rather than merely a servant to be commanded. This transparency also highlights His sovereignty and the fact that He chooses to reveal His will to humanity. God could have carried out His plan without involving Abraham, but He chooses to include him in the process. This shows God’s desire to partner with humanity and involve them in His purposes.
Biblical connections
In subsequent verses, God reveals His intention to investigate the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah. Upon hearing this, Abraham intercedes for the righteous people in those cities, asking God to spare them. This revelation serves as a vital lesson on God’s holiness and equips Abraham to be a faithful witness. It prepares him to comprehend the severity of sin and the necessity of righteousness, ensuring the covenant promises passed down to his family will be grounded in a true knowledge of the Lord’s character.
Application
The dialogue between God and Abraham underscores the value of seeking a close walk with God and remaining open to His leading in life. As believers draw near to Him, they are brought into a deeper understanding of His will and ways. This profound privilege also carries the responsibility to intercede for others. Believers are encouraged to cultivate a listening ear and a heart that seeks to know God’s mind, aligning prayers and actions with His will.
