Genesis 19:32
Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
Genesis 19:32 (KJV)
Context
Genesis nineteen tells the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the escape of Lot and his daughters. This particular verse refers to an incident that occurs after Lot and his family flee from the doomed cities. To understand the background and meaning of this difficult passage, we need to carefully review the tragic events leading up to it.
Lot and his family were residents of Sodom, a city filled with overwhelming wickedness. The Lord decided to destroy the city because of its rampant sinfulness, but He showed mercy to Lot and his family. Two angels were sent to Sodom to rescue Lot before the destruction took place. The men of Sodom surrounded the house, demanding the visitors for evil purposes. Lot tried to protect the angels by offering his own daughters instead, a tragic action that demonstrated his deeply flawed judgment and the profound moral degradation of the city.
The angels instructed Lot and his family to flee from the city before its destruction. They warned them not to look back, but Lot’s wife disobeyed and tragically became a pillar of salt. Lot and his two daughters escaped to the mountains and found refuge in an isolated cave. It is in this dark cave that the incident described in our verse occurs. The daughters, thinking that they and their father were the only survivors left on earth, came up with a desperate plan to preserve their family line.
Meaning
The daughters made their father drink wine to excess and engaged in unthinkable actions with him, hoping to conceive and continue their lineage. Their plan was born out of profound desperation, deep fear, and a complete lack of understanding of God’s larger plan. The Bible never condones or endorses such behavior. Rather, it presents the events exactly as they unfolded, providing an honest, sobering account of the flaws, fears, and grave mistakes made by these individuals.
This passage highlights a dark and deeply troubled moment. It serves as a stark reminder of the enduring taint of sin, even among those who have been rescued from judgment. The moral corruption of Sodom appears to have left a lasting imprint on the daughters’ worldview. Their willingness to rely on deception reveals a pragmatic morality that disregards righteous standards. Instead of trusting the Lord who had just miraculously delivered them, they took matters into their own hands through deeply compromised methods.
Application
This narrative highlights the tragic downfall of Lot himself. Once a highly respected, prosperous man in the city, he was reduced to a fearful dweller in an isolated cave, completely oblivious to his own moral failure. It clearly underscores the severe danger of moral compromise in our lives. We must constantly remain vigilant and seek God’s wisdom daily.
Reflection
This verse is a serious warning about the destructive harvest of fear. True and lasting preservation comes through trusting in God’s providence. We are called to follow His principles always, trusting His perfect grace even in the most challenging circumstances we face today.
