Genesis 21:5

And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.

Genesis 21:5 (KJV)

Genesis 21:5 records the birth of Isaac to Abraham when Abraham was one hundred years old. This moment comes after many years of waiting. God had promised Abraham and Sarah a son, yet Sarah had been barren and both were far past the normal age for having children. The verse marks the exact fulfilment of that promise, showing that God keeps His word precisely as He has spoken it. Abraham’s age is not a small detail; it emphasizes the miraculous nature of Isaac’s birth and confirms that God’s promise was fulfilled exactly as He had said.

The emphasis on Abraham’s age highlights the miracle. Nothing in human ability or circumstance could produce this child. Abraham’s faith and obedience are also visible here. He trusted God’s promise and waited patiently, and he later circumcised Isaac on the eighth day, just as God commanded (Genesis 21:4). This verse demonstrates that God’s faithfulness does not depend on human strength or timing. The birth of Isaac is a testament to God’s ability to bring about His purposes even when circumstances seem impossible.

Isaac is the child of promise through whom God would establish His covenant. His birth points forward to a greater fulfilment in Christ, who came through Isaac’s lineage. Yet the text itself does not mention Christ, so this connection should be drawn carefully. Sarah’s joyful laughter in the following verses (Genesis 21:6-7) shows the delight that accompanies God’s miraculous work. This event also fits into the broader narrative of God’s redemptive plan, as Isaac is the child through whom God would continue His covenant promises.

Believers are encouraged to trust in God’s promises, even when circumstances seem impossible. Waiting on God’s timing is not passive; it is an active trust that He will do what He has said. This verse reassures us that God can bring life and purpose out of situations that appear hopeless. We can remain patient in waiting, knowing that God’s timing is perfect and His faithfulness is not dependent on human ability or circumstance.

God’s promise to Abraham was fulfilled exactly as He had said. The same God who gave Isaac is faithful to His word today. His plans are not limited by age, barrenness, or any other human limitation. We can rest in the certainty that what God has promised, He will accomplish. This truth invites us to trust Him more deeply, even when the waiting is long.
