Genesis 24:27
And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the Lord led me to the house of my master’s brethren.
Genesis 24:27 (KJV)
Context
Abraham sent his servant to Mesopotamia to find a wife for Isaac from Abraham’s relatives. The servant prayed for a sign at a well, and Rebekah fulfilled it exactly. He then bowed and worshiped, and verse 27 records his spoken blessing.
Meaning
The servant blesses the Lord as “the God of my master Abraham,” showing that God’s covenant with Abraham extended to this mission. He declares that God has not left Abraham destitute of “mercy and truth.” These two words, chesed and emet in Hebrew, describe God’s loyal, covenant love and His faithfulness to His promises. The servant recognizes that God’s guidance of his journey directly expressed that steadfast love.
His words “I being in the way, the Lord led me” emphasize that God directed him as he actively obeyed his task. He did not stay idle; he traveled, and God guided his steps to Rebekah’s family, Abraham’s brethren.
Application
Believers can trust that God faithfully guides those who walk in obedience. Like the servant, we should pray for direction, proceed in faith, and then praise God when He answers. God’s guidance often comes through ordinary circumstances, such as a journey or a meeting at a well, but it is no less divine. We should see God’s hand in daily life and testify to His goodness.
Reflection
The servant’s immediate response to answered prayer was worship. He took no credit for his own wisdom but attributed the outcome entirely to God’s mercy and truth. This invites us to cultivate a thankful heart, to seek and follow God’s leading, and to rest in the assurance of His unchanging character.
