Genesis 24:3
And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
Genesis 24:3 (KJV)
Context
Abraham was old, and he wanted to secure a wife for his son Isaac. He called his servant and made him swear a solemn oath. The servant is not named here, though later tradition identifies him as Eliezer. Abraham lived among the Canaanites, yet he did not want Isaac to marry one of their daughters. This concern was not about ethnic purity but about spiritual faithfulness. The Canaanites worshiped other gods, and such a marriage could lead Isaac’s family away from the true God.
Meaning
The oath was sworn by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth. This title shows that God rules over all creation. By invoking God’s name, Abraham made the promise a matter of ultimate accountability. The servant could not treat this task lightly. The command was clear: do not take a wife for Isaac from the Canaanites. This charge was binding, and the servant later repeated it in Genesis 24:37, showing that he understood its seriousness.
Biblical connections
Abraham’s concern appears again in the law, where Israel was told not to marry the nations around them (Deuteronomy 7:3-4). The principle is that close relationships can shape one’s faith. For the Christian, this passage does not teach a universal ban on intermarriage, but it does model a principle of prioritizing faith compatibility. The servant’s obedience in the following verses serves as an example of faithful execution of a sacred trust.
Application
For believers today, this verse does not forbid marriage with people of other cultures. It does teach the importance of faith compatibility. A Christian should seek a spouse who shares commitment to Christ. This principle also applies to other close partnerships. The goal is to protect and pass on a living faith to the next generation. Even when culture pressures compromise, we are called to make decisions that honor God and preserve spiritual integrity.
Reflection
Abraham trusted God to guide the servant, even though the path was uncertain. His obedience to God’s covenant shaped his family decisions. This verse calls us to make choices that honor God, knowing that He is sovereign over all the earth.
