Genesis 30:6
And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.
Genesis 30:6 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the story of Jacob’s family. His two wives, Rachel and Leah, were sisters. Rachel had been barren while Leah bore several sons. In her desperation, Rachel gave her maid Bilhah to Jacob as a concubine (Genesis 30:1-4). Bilhah conceived and bore a son, and Rachel named him Dan.
Meaning
Rachel’s words, “God hath judged me,” show her belief that God acted as her judge, vindicating her. She also says God “hath heard my voice,” meaning He answered her prayers. The name Dan means “judge” or “judgment” in Hebrew. By choosing this name, Rachel made the child a lasting reminder of God’s intervention. Her declaration reflects a deep conviction that conception and childbirth are ultimately in God’s hands.
Biblical connections
Rachel’s experience follows a pattern in Scripture where God shows favor to women who were previously unable to conceive, such as Sarah, Hannah, and Elizabeth. This pattern highlights God’s power to bring life in impossible situations. It also points to His faithfulness to covenant promises and His perfect timing. Rachel’s earlier cry, “Give me children, or else I die” (Genesis 30:1), shows her deep longing and the significance of this answered prayer.
Application
Rachel’s declaration teaches that God hears the cries of His people. Even when circumstances seem hopeless, prayer is not in vain. Believers can trust that God sees their struggles and acts according to His sovereign plan. The birth of Dan marked a turning point for Rachel, from barrenness to the beginning of her legacy within the tribes of Israel. This event is part of the larger narrative where the twelve tribes originate.
Reflection
This verse encourages readers to view their own hardships through a theological lens, as Rachel did. She recognized God’s hand in her situation, not random chance. Her renewed faith reminds us that God’s judgments are just and His answers to prayer are sure. In every season, He remains faithful to His purposes.
