Genesis 31:16
For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children’s: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.
Genesis 31:16 (KJV)
Context
Rachel and Leah speak these words after Jacob tells them that God has commanded him to return to Canaan. Jacob had served their father Laban for many years, and Laban had repeatedly changed his wages (Genesis 31:7). God had shown Jacob how to increase his flocks, and now He called him back to his homeland.
The wives reply that they have no inheritance in their father’s house. Laban had treated them like foreigners, selling them and using up the payment for them. So they agree with Jacob’s plan to leave.
Meaning
Rachel and Leah declare that the wealth God took from Laban belongs to them and their children. They see God’s hand in the transfer of property. They do not claim it as their own achievement, but as God’s provision for their family. Their words also show that they understand God’s sovereignty over family affairs and His ability to provide through unexpected means.
Their final words, “whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do,” show complete trust in God’s instruction. They do not ask for more signs or delay. They encourage Jacob to obey at once. This response is a model of faith expressing itself in obedience.
Biblical connections
This response connects to God’s promise to Jacob at Bethel, where He said He would be with him and bring him back to this land (Genesis 28:15). The wives’ faith confirms that promise. Their words also echo the principle that God is sovereign over families and can move wealth according to His purposes. God had already been at work in the breeding of the flocks (Genesis 31:9-12), and the wives recognize this divine action.
Application
Rachel and Leah model how a family should respond when God directs a difficult change. They recognize God’s provision, support one another, and obey without knowing every detail of the future.
Recognize that every blessing comes from God, even when it arrives through hardship.
Trust God’s guidance even when it means leaving familiar people and places.
Stand united with family members in following God’s commands.
Reflection
God’s care for Rachel and Leah reminds us that He sees the needs of every generation. Their words encourage us to obey God’s voice, knowing that His provision is trustworthy and His plans are good. Even when the path is difficult, God’s guidance is to be followed, and His provision is certain.
