Genesis 31:7
And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
Genesis 31:7 (KJV)
Context
Jacob speaks these words to his wives, Rachel and Leah, as he prepares to leave his father-in-law Laban. He had served Laban for twenty years, fourteen for his daughters and six for the flocks. During that time, Laban repeatedly changed the agreed wages for Jacob’s work. Jacob’s words come after he noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him had changed, and he reminds his wives of his faithful service.
Meaning
When Jacob says Laban “changed my wages ten times,” the number ten can mean “many times” or a literal count. Jacob repeats the same charge to Laban’s face later, showing this was a real pattern of deceit. Yet Jacob also testifies that God did not allow Laban to harm him. God’s protection was stronger than Laban’s schemes. This verse does not excuse Laban’s dishonesty; rather, it shows God’s power to overrule human deceit for His purposes.
Biblical connections
This verse connects to God’s promise to Jacob at Bethel, where God said He would keep Jacob wherever he went (Genesis 28:15). Here Jacob sees that promise fulfilled. His safety and prosperity came from God’s intervention, not from Laban’s goodwill. The same truth appears in Jacob’s later words to Laban in Genesis 31:41, where he again mentions the changed wages. Throughout the narrative, God had been with Jacob in Haran, fulfilling His promise to protect and bless him.
Application
Jacob’s experience teaches us to trust God when others treat us unfairly. God sees injustice and can overrule human deceit for His purposes. We should maintain integrity in our own dealings, even when others do not. We can also find comfort that God is watching over us, just as He watched over Jacob. His faithfulness does not depend on the honesty of those around us.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that God is faithful to His promises, even in difficult circumstances. Jacob did not let Laban’s dishonesty destroy his faith. Instead, he recognized God’s hand in his life. We too can look back and see how God has protected and provided for us, and we can trust Him for the future. God’s care for Jacob is a model of faith for every believer facing unfair treatment.
