Genesis 31:6
And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.
Genesis 31:6 (KJV)
Context
Genesis 31 records Jacob’s departure from Laban, his father-in-law, after twenty years of service. During those years Jacob acquired wealth and a large family, but Laban’s sons grew jealous, and the household became tense. In this verse Jacob speaks directly to his wives, Rachel and Leah, reminding them that they themselves knew how wholeheartedly he had served their father.
Meaning
The phrase “with all my power” points to the totality and integrity of Jacob’s work. He had tended Laban’s flocks, managed his possessions, and increased his wealth—not grudgingly, but with diligence and faithfulness. Jacob appeals to his wives’ firsthand knowledge, making clear that his service was not merely outward but sincere and complete.
Biblical connections
Jacob’s words echo the broader biblical principle that faithful service is seen and honored by God, even when human employers or authorities fail to acknowledge it. Though Laban’s attitude had changed and his sons accused Jacob of taking their father’s wealth, Jacob’s integrity stood firm. His wives’ agreement confirms the truth of his claim, showing that his character was known to those closest to him.
Application
This verse calls believers to serve with wholehearted diligence, even under difficult or unfair circumstances. Jacob did not retaliate against Laban’s deception; he continued to work faithfully. Our integrity in daily responsibilities—whether at work, at home, or in the church—can bear witness to those around us and honor God, who is the ultimate judge and rewarder.
Reflection
Jacob’s example invites us to examine our own service. Do we work “with all our power,” not only when appreciated but also when overlooked? God’s faithfulness throughout Jacob’s story reminds us that our trust in Him enables us to navigate difficult situations with integrity, knowing that He sees and values our faithful labor.
