Genesis 31:5

Listen to this article

And said vnto them, I see your fathers countenance, that it is not toward mee as before: but the God of my father hath bene with me. Genesis 31:5 (KJV)

Genesis 31:5 records Jacob’s formal request to Laban for his wives, children, and goods as he prepares to return to his homeland. Jacob had been living with Laban for many years, serving him under various agreements, and his increasing wealth became a source of tension between them. Earlier in the chapter Jacob notes that the LORD had caused Laban’s attitude toward him to change, and he acknowledges that the God of his father has been with him throughout his time in Laban’s household. The broader narrative highlights Jacob’s awareness of Laban’s changed countenance and the presence of the God of his father, though these themes are not expressed in the specific wording of Genesis 31:5. This verse therefore marks a decisive moment in the story, shifting the focus from human relationships to divine providence. Jacob’s recognition of God’s hand in his life serves as a reminder that ultimate trust and reliance should be placed in God rather than in the fluctuating attitudes of people. The passage encourages believers to remain aware of God’s involvement in their circumstances and to place their confidence in His faithful guidance, knowing that His providence surpasses any shifting human sentiment or challenge. In conclusion, Genesis 31:5 captures Jacob’s request to Laban for his family and possessions as he readies himself to depart, while the surrounding context underscores the enduring presence and faithfulness of the God of his father.
