Genesis 31:41
Thus have I bene twentie yeres in thy house: I serued thee fourteene yeeres for thy two daughters, and sixe yeres for thy cattel; and thou hast changed my wages ten times. Genesis 31:41 (KJV)
In this verse Jacob is speaking to his father‑in‑law Laban as he presents his grievances before they reach an agreement regarding their mutual concerns. To understand the significance of this verse it is helpful to provide some context. Jacob had been living with Laban, his uncle, for a significant period of time. He had initially fled to Laban’s house in Haran to escape his brother Esau, who intended to kill him. While staying with Laban Jacob fell in love with Rachel, Laban’s younger daughter, and expressed his desire to marry her. Laban agreed but deceived Jacob by giving him Leah, his older daughter, in marriage instead. Jacob was then required to work another seven years in order to marry Rachel, the woman he truly loved (Genesis 29:18‑30).
In addition to the marriage arrangement Jacob and Laban made an agreement regarding Jacob’s wages for tending Laban’s flocks. Jacob proposed that he would take speckled and spotted sheep and goats from Laban’s flock as his wages, saying, “Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock. I will pass through all thy flock today, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted sheep…” (Genesis 30:31‑32). However Laban continually changed the terms of the agreement, attempting to manipulate Jacob’s compensation.
By the time we reach Genesis 31:41 Jacob reflects on his service, stating that he had served Laban for twenty years—fourteen years dedicated to obtaining Rachel and Leah as his wives and six years spent tending Laban’s livestock. He emphasizes the frequent changes in his wages, highlighting Laban’s inconsistent and unfair treatment. This verse conveys Jacob’s frustration and reveals the difficult circumstances he faced during his time with Laban.
